MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – There are few things as relaxing as sitting down in a comfortable chair and reading a good book. But sometimes that book shelf can turn into a monster of paperbacks if you’re not careful. Organizing expert Andi Willis shows us ways we can keep our library from getting out of control. The first step is the easiest: clean the book shelf. Nothing loves dust more than a shelf, so go ahead and remove all of the books and dust it off. Make sure the tops of the books are clean as well. Eliminating the dust can help eliminate any unwanted coughs and sneezes.

The second step is to organize your books. Andi suggests several different ways to order your collection, such as non-fiction and fiction in different sections. You can also separate them by hardbacks and paperbacks, or even order them by color from darkest covers to the lightest or vice versa.

The hardest step is deciding which books you’d like to keep, and which ones you’d like to remove. Andi has a game one of her colleague’s developed called “Friends, Acquaintances, and Strangers.” Books that are “friends” stay on the shelf, but the “strangers” go into the bin for storage or donated to a local library. The “acquaintances” are a bit tougher, but Andi suggests putting them away at first and see if you ever go into storage to retrieve them. If you don’t, you know those books need to go.

Lastly, make sure your E-Reader isn’t just as cluttered. Anything you’ve downloaded, such as free books, that you have no desire to ever revisit should be deleted out.
